We are excited to introduce our new 4th grade teacher, Emily Jensen!

Image

Paul Bunyan and I both share the hometown of Brainerd, Minnesota, where I am the second of four siblings. There I attended Christian school all the way from kindergarten until graduating high school, and during that time I saw the tremendous opportunities that a Christian education provides. After high school, I attended Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa and received my Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Elementary Education and Bible with a Middle School Endorsement in Social Studies and Literature.

During my time at FBBC I was given the opportunity to student teach in South Africa, and it was during this time that He showed me that He might not want me to teach overseas. See, I had grown up with this assumption that in order to be most effective for God I needed to go somewhere far away or “exciting.” All that I really desire is to be used most effectively for Him, and He began showing me that I can teach in the States and glorify Him through that just as much as teaching overseas would have. This idea took some getting used to, but God is wise, and it was around this time that I first was introduced to Heritage Christian School.

Right off the bat, I was impressed by the sincerity of their school mission. Instead of just being a “nominally” Christian school, they lived it out! They stood out as a school that is not only academically excellent but also earnestly wants to grow their students more like Christ. After lots of prayers God has made it obvious that He wants me at Heritage next year and I cannot wait to begin my fourth grade adventure!

8th Grade Reflections

Image

Before graduation, the 8th grade class of 2014 was given a writing prompt to reflect on their experience at Heritage and whether or not the school is successfully fulfilling the mission statement. Their thoughtful and honest responses are worth sharing with friends, family and prospective families. We are incredibly proud of these former 8th graders, and we look forward to seeing God’s plan for their lives continue to unfold as they move on to high school. Read a few of their essays here.

Heritage teacher, Rachel Super, to teach 3-Day Pre-K & Middle School Art starting 2014

Image

Hi! My name is Rachel Super and I live in Iowa City, Iowa. I have been married, for four years, to my wonderful husband, Josh. Josh works as a Coordinator at Systems Unlimited in Iowa City. We have a one-year old daughter, Lydia, who is growing so much every day! Our dog, Max, is the final (and furriest) member of our family.

After graduating from Dordt College in 2006, God blessed me with a variety of teaching experiences. I taught Kindergarten-8th grade in a variety of places and several different subject areas. Five years ago, God clearly led my husband and me to Heritage, where I have been teaching 4th grade. I absolutely love being a teacher and working at Heritage.

For this coming school year, I will be making a change to teach 3-day Pre-K and Middle School Art at Heritage. I am excited to teach pre-kindergarten and to engage them with the world God has created, through hands on activities. I am looking forward to the pre-kindergarteners’ enthusiasm about learning new things. I am also excited to get back to teaching Middle School Art. God has created a beautiful world and I am looking forward to exploring different aspects of the beauty God has created with the students

Heritage teacher, Laura Bailey, will move to teach first grade in 2014-2015

Image

Hi, my name is Laura Bailey and I’m so excited to be teaching first grade at Heritage next year.  As most of you know, I have had the opportunity this year to work in pre-k with Mr. Neal.  Prior to that, I’ve been a stay at home mom for the last five and a half years.

I’m originally from Wilton, Iowa.  The oldest of four girls, I graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in early-childhood education.  Following graduation, I began teaching at West Liberty Community Schools.  During my twelve years there, I taught second grade, first grade, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten.  Because I am bilingual, a highlight of my time there was being involved in their dual-language program.

My husband Kevin and I have lived in North Liberty for a little more than three years. Kevin is a civil engineer for McClure Engineering, here in North Liberty. We have four children, Jared and Micah-13, Ethan-11, and Natalie-4.  Grace Community Church is our church home.  Kevin and I are involved there in various avenues, but a favorite is teaching Sunday school together.

Although I’ve taught before, this is my first experience with Christian education.  How excited I am to get to share Christ freely with my students and pursue Him alongside them.  A favorite passage is Psalm 37:5-6 “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this; He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.  “I praise God for Heritage and the opportunity to be a part of his team here.

Meet our new Heritage Singers Director and Music Appreciation Teacher!

Image

My name is Valerie Letenyei and I have been teaching music for 10 years.  I enjoy teaching children and adults of all ages.  I believe it is never too young or too early to learn about music!  I began learning at the age of 11 and continued studying while attending William Tyndale College where I received a Certificate in Bible & Christian Ministries and an Associate’s Degree of Liberal Arts.  I am originally from the small town of Flat Rock, Michigan but after getting married in 1991, my husband was called to Youth Ministry at a church in St. Louis where we lived for 15 years.  While in St. Louis I became a certified Kindermusik Educator and spent 3 years in private training with Nancy Schaaf who has her Masters of Music Performance and Pedagogy with the goal of beginning my own piano studio.

I was the Intermediate Choir Director at Providence Fine Arts, taught Kindermusik at Dayspring School of the Arts for 3 years and taught private lessons from my home studio for 5 years.  I also had the privilege of homeschooling my two daughters for 8 years.  My family and I moved to Iowa in 2008, where I continued teaching private lessons and served as the Children’s Ministry director at LifePointe Christian Faith Center for 3 years.  I now live in North Liberty with my husband, Ron, of 23 years and my two daughters, Leah and Holly, who are 19 and 16.  The parent of one of my students recently told me about the opening for a Music Appreciation/Choir Director and I am blessed to have this opportunity to teach the students of Heritage Christian School.

Serah Snell will be the new HCS Athletic Director and PE Teacher!

Image

I am delighted and humbled to be given the opportunity to continue to teach at Heritage Christian School.

I attended Northwestern College in Orange City, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education with a Health Minor, a Recreation Concentration and a Coaching Endorsement. As many of you may know, I was blessed with the opportunity to student teach with Connie Keel last semester, and had the opportunity to work with each and every student at Heritage. During that time, I enjoyed working with many of those students as the assistant coach for the Heritage soccer team. Since completing my teaching certificate in December, I have been serving as the long term substitute teacher for middle school history and literature at Heritage.

I moved to the Iowa City area five years ago and now live in North Liberty with my husband, Jared. We have been blessed to be married for two years now. Jared is an engineer and works on aircraft Automatic Flight Control Systems at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids. We are members of Parkview Church and are both finishing up our second year on the leadership team for the midsized young adult “Grad Group.” During the summer I work for the North Liberty Recreation Department’s Summer Recsters Program. In my spare time, I like to play board games, read books, and be involved in sports.

I would like to share with you a scripture that has stayed with me throughout the years and it comes from I Timothy 4:8, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” (NIV) This verse has kept things in perspective and helped shape my philosophy on athletics and physical education.

I am looking forward to this upcoming year and am excited to be working with your students!
